Day #66 (yes I counted)

Alright. So October wasn't the great month I thought it would be. I actually did really well through Thanksgiving. I lost weight that weekend. Around October 25th Jordan and I both ended up with the flu. There is nothing that makes you feel better when you're sick than carbs. Really, when you're not feeling well and you barely want to eat as it is, the thought of meat, cheese and veggies just really turns you off.

Enter Croissants and Orange Juice! Yummm. So that just leads to days of eating WHATEVER you want. Honestly, it was really bad. I can't even list off everything I ate that week...but it was GOOD. So I think that the week off set me back about 5 pounds.

I got back on the horse and really strict with myself on November 4th. And I've lost that weight and then some.

Start Weight: 200.00
Current Weight: 179.00
Total Weight Loss: 21 pounds

Maybe I'm just trying to justify my slip ups, but 21 pounds in under 3 months? I've NEVER done that before. So really, if I take some time off because I'm just in a funk or I'm really bored with food I don't see it as a problem. One thing that the week off reminded me was that I really do FEEL better on Atkins. I don't plan on having any more breaks until Christmas. I can avoid all the yummy Starbucks Christmas drinks for most of the season, but I'm having my salted caramel hot chocolate and my Peppermint Mocha at some point this year. :)

I've also started at a gym. More on that later.

Week 5 Weigh in!

Hello everyone!

So this weekend was a dreaded food filled holiday. I give thanks for losing weight even with the food in front of me! :)

Start Weight: 200.0
Current Weight: 183.0
Total Weight Loss: 17.0

YAY! I can't believe how fast the 80's are falling off. I went to a GAP outlet store this weekend and was able to buy a pair of jeans a size smaller than usual! Plus I haven't owned GAP jeans in a LONG time because of the price, but outlets are always awesome.

Saturday is measurement day and I'll try and remember to post about my inches.

It's been awhile

Hello! La-La-La!

So I'm back. I haven't been updatting as much because...well...once the weightloss slows down it's just not as exciting or fantastical and so I didn't feel like doing it. ok? I'm just being a brat.

Here are some updates! I'm just going to go with this morning's weigh in cause I haven't been paying too close attention to the scale these days!

Also seeing as today is the 9th and I started on the 9th it's a month weigh in, how about that?

Start Weight: 200.00
Current Weight: 185.8
Total Weight Loss: 14.2 pounds.

Not too shabby! I'm pretty sure that I'm also down around 6 inches. I'm losing about 2 inches a week. Tomorrow is my measurement day, so it will probably (hopefully) be more. :)

Atkins Pumpkin Cookies

Ok, here's the pumpkin cookie recipe that I got from the Atkins forum. I changed it a bit to make it work best for me. The first batch I did were pretty gross!

1/2 cup of butter warmed
1/2 cup of flax flour
5 tsps of liquid sugar twin

mix together and then add

2 cups of pure pumpkin. (You get it canned but make sure it's not the pie filling that has added sugar and spices )
1 tsp baking powder
1 egg
1 additional cup of flax flour
1 tablespoon of cinnamon.

I was making it up as I went along so in the end I added a bit more pumpkin to fix the consistency. Didn't measure it....but it should look like regular cookie dough.

Place small drops on a baking sheet (should make about 35 cookies) and use a wet fork to flatten them down. The first time I did it I didn't flatten them and they baked up weird.

Bake at 400 for 30 minutes. May take less if you have a good oven...i don't. The insides stay soft, almost like they're not cooked, but they dry out a bit by the next day and have a pretty good consistency.

It's a trial and error recipe for sure!

Pizza Casserole

That's what we had for dinner last night. I've been craving pizza and tried to come up with an Atkins friendly crust, but I just gave up on that and did this instead. :) I made it in a glass casserole dish, but you could use a cake pan if you want.

Create a layer of each of the following Items

Start with a layer of tomatoes
grated cheese
pepperoni
green pepper
mushrooms
onion
another layer of tomatoes
and lastly a layer of fresh mozzarella
Sprinkle on garlic powder and Italian seasonings

Bake at 400 for 20 minutes. Obviously you can change ingredients based on what you have or what you prefer. It's a bit soupy because of the tomatoes. I was going to use pizza sauce but it has added sugar. Just use a serving spoon with holes in it.

It was really good! the cheese was really gooey and you don't really miss the crust. At least I didn't. :)

Other than that I don't have much to update now that I'm only weighing myself once a week.

Official Week #2 weigh in

So today is the end of the 2nd week on Atkins. I was very good and kept the scale hidden the whole week. Here is the good news!

Start Weight: 200.0
Week 1 Weight: 192 (lost 8 pounds)
Week 2 Weight: 188.8 (lost 3.2 pounds)

Total Weight loss = 11.2 pounds.

I was so excited this morning when I read that! I haven't broken the 190's ever in my weight loss. The last time I was in the 180's was when I first moved to Waterloo in 2005-2006.

One thing about last week though. I didn't keep as good tabs on myself as I should have. This is the week where I'm supposed to move up to the next level, but I'm going to stay here for at least one more week to really nail down the basics.

1) I didn't write down my days food or carb count
2) I more or less estimated in my head what my carbs were (can't be accurate!)
3) I didn't get all my water in everyday

The reason I slacked is because when I see something working my brain says, "oh yah, you know what you're doing...you've got this!" So I need to tell that part to shut up and realize that one week doesn't fix years of problems.

Measurements!

Hey everyone!

So today was my measurements day. I'm not going to give you the breakdown, but I will tell you that I lost 2.75 inches in total. I'm not 100 percent sure of these results only cause it's hard to tell if I measured exactly the same places as last week and but I'm pretty confident.

It says that I lost an inch around my arms and that may sound ridiculous, but I have noticed the most difference so far in my arm. The muscles seem more defined because they don't have the extra cushion :) SO I'm going to take that as true.

I've been really busy this week. I have classes on Monday and Tuesday nights on top of working full time and trying to plan meals. I've been having a lot of fun with dinners but I'm having a really hard time getting inspired for lunches. I don't know how many more tuna salads I'm going to be able to stomach. :(

Also, If you're looking to make dinners and don't have a huge budget for ingredients I have 2 suggestions.

#1: Find a grocery store near you that discounts meat that's almost at the expiry date. We have a grocery store right across the street from us (Metro) but it's pretty expensive for meat there. We happened to be at the grocery store in the mall up the street from us and noticed the past few weeks that meat there is discounted by 50% if it's almost up.

Today we got a 3 pack of pork chop, a pork roast, 2 packages of prime chicken, 2 packages of porkchops that are packaged with spices all for $19.00. We just freeze it anyway so it's a lifesaver for us.

#2 Buy a spice rack. There are tons of spice racks you can get with the spices already in it. We had a bunch of spices in the resealable packets that were just in the cupboard. Out of sight out of mind. So we bought a rack for the counter and filled the containers with what we already had. It makes all the difference to cook with the spices....more experimenting and less boring meals.

Ok, I'm really just procrastinating here. I'm supposed to be going to the school to study. So let me know in the comments what you do to cut costs and make your meals exciting!

Atkins Bloggers

I never really thought that there would be other Atkins Bloggers out there. Obviously I didn't think i was some sort of pioneer, but I never thought to look I guess.

It's awesome to see other people out there, some very close to my age, going through this as well. So for any other Atkineers, welcome.

Official Week #1 weigh in

So this morning I did my official weigh in for the week and I was at 192. So that means I've lost 8 pounds this week. The gain could be water weight or it could be regular fluctuations of the body.

What I've decided to do so that I'm not hung up on the numbers is I've put my scale up on a shelf. Now that I know that this is going to work for me I've got to trust it and just do my weekly weigh in. It's pretty much a habit to weight myself and I have to try not to focus on the day to day numbers as much.

I'm excited to do my measurements on Saturday morning and see if I have any changes! :)

First Weekend on Atkins.

So I made it through my first weekend on Atkins. It wasn't really as hard as I thought it would be. There's still a lot that I can allow myself, even when I'm out of the house. New Starbucks drink is a Grande sugar free cinnamon dolce americano. Then I can add some cream. 1 gram of carbs. :)

We went to Heart and Crown in the Market. I had a diet coke and 2 waters. Not as much fun but still enjoyable.

It's monday now and I weighed myself this morning.

I've lost *drumroll* 9 Pounds in 5 days.

Can't complain about it!

Atkins Day #5

Holy Crap!

Day 5 weigh in and I'm down 8 pounds. :)

In other good news, the fogginess and fatigue have finally passed. I only had about 7 hours sleep. Up at nine and had breakfast and showered, walked to Carlingwood to do some errands and walked home. Came home to plan dinner and then went to the grocery store and walmart across the street. Came home and Jordan's taking a nap and I'm about to clean the apartment.

SO MUCH ENERGY! I don't think I've felt like this in a really long time. My head is really clear and I generally just feel better right now.

I had 2 nights in a row where I woke up with a charlie horse in my calf. Those are so painful. But I read on the forums that that is either dehydration or lack of potassium in the body. I have been drinking about 10 cups of water a day, so I tried a potassium supplement and last night I didn't have the cramps.

I also took my measurements so that I can see the progress as I lose weight. I'm not going to post my numbers, but I'll let you guys know how many inches I lose.

Atkins Update! Days 1-2.5

Hello! So I'm actually not hating this as much as I thought I would. I'm not feeling hungry between meals (which i usually do) and I don't really feel like I'm missing anything. It's probably the new diet *high* so I'm sure this chipper spirit will evaporate by the time day 14 comes around.

Right now I'm on the Induction Phase of Atkins. I'm allowed 20 net carbs a day. Net carbs are the grams of carbs minus the grams of fibre. Now 12-15 of these nc's have to be from vegetables. The other 5 can come from cheese, sweetner, some condiments, some beverages.

It may sound like a pretty meager existance so I thought that I'd post my recent menu.

Day #1 Weigh in = 200.0

Breakfast - 2 eggs and 3 strips of bacon
Lunch - 2 mini cucumbers, cheese, ceasar salad and an Atkins Bar

That afternoon I got a wicked migraine! So dinner was pretty uninspired cause I just wanted to go to bed!!

Dinner - 2 egg omlette with green peppers, 2 sausage patties and half a tomatoe and some cheese curds.

At this point I went to sleep for 12 hours! It was actually pretty awesome!

Day #2 Weigh in = 197.8 (lost 2.2 pounds)

Breakfast - Scrambled eggs (NO MORE EGGS PLEASE~) and bacon
Snack - Coffee! lol. Cream and splenda count as a carb each
Lunch - Tuna salad wrapped in romaine leaves, ceasar salad
snack - 2 mini cucumbers
Dinner - Turkey patty with fried onions, cheese and bacon! Boo yah! and a ceasar salad.

Day # 3 Weigh in = 194.8 (lost 3.0 pounds total lost 5.2 pounds)

Breakfast - 1 egg, bacon and sauteed asparagus
Lunch - Tuna salad with green peppers in it, ceasar salad, some cheese, and a coke zero

So far that's where I am. I know it sounds like a lot of the same foods, but I was working with what I had in the house that was acceptable. I went grocery shopping last night and got a lot of fresh veggies. Writing it down made me realize that it sounds boring, but I haven't been bored at all....except with the eggs....

There is a recipe to make a Muffin in a Minute that has under 3 carbs. So I'm going to try that for breakfast tomorrow.

If anyone has any carb free breakfast ideas, PLEASE let me know!

I'll keep you all updated!

<3 Steph.

P.S. TONS of water! At least 1.89 litres, but I tend to get a lot more than that!

Atkins Day #1

Alright, here we go.

I weighed myself this morning and it was a spooky 200.0. I had to check a few times because the number seemed like too perfect a starting weight...like I made it up. LOL.

My highest weight ever was 216. That was around fall of 2007. I started working out and going to weight watchers and since then I've hovered between 192-200. I'm sure the awesome pizza last night did not help at all. But it was SOOOOOOOOO good.

This morning I had eggs and bacon for breakfast. 0 carbs! (*EDIT* eggs are 0.6 carbs each) One thing that interested me about atkins is that you're only supposed to have 20 net carbs a day for the first two weeks and 15 of them are supposed to be from vegetables. Since vegetables don't have a ton of carbs I think it's going to be hard to get up there. At least getting my veggies in will deter me from eating bacon wrapped cheese for dinner every night.

OK! I'll be weighing in every Wednesday morning. I'm going to try and not step on the scale in between or else I'll get down on myself.

New Approach

Alright! So...accountability eh? Doesn't quite work if you avoid the blog.

September started and there was no new weightloss. I believe I gained 2 pounds back. I haven't touchd my exercises and I've been going out a lot.

This of course means that it's time to pick up my socks. I've always said that I think Atkins is stupid....blah blah blah....I won't get into it cause I'll sound like a hypocrite because I've decided that it's my new plan.

I've seen Jordan's sister lose a lot of weight on Atkins. About 16 months ago she started Atkins. I told her she'd gain it all back yadda yadda yadda and she didn't. SO I've decided that I should give it a shot. I love carbs! LOVE. Don't know that I can live without them....cakes, and doughnuts, and white bread. Whitebread, I'll miss you the most!

So to kick off this new plan and help keep track of it I've decided.....dun dun dun....to post my actual number on here. EEEEEK!

Not posting my numbers made it easy for me to pretend that everything was going well. I didn't REALLY have to prove anything to anyone. BUT once my number is out there I'm going to want to show you everyweek that I can change it. SO I'll post it tomorrow because we all know it's best to weigh yourself in the morning.

<3 Steph

p.s. I confess....I ate 3 pieces of pizza for dinner in preparation for going cold turkey tomorrow. I miss you already refined sugar and white flour!

New Motivation!

Alright. I used my teeth and vacation time as a real excuse to stop working out. I've blown it pretty bad. BUT I haven't really gained anything...I really maintained the loss from last month so far.

But I have new Motivation to lose weight and start taking it seriously again. WEDDING DRESSES!

Nothing says start your diet now like wedding pictures that you'll have a lifetime.

Time to kick it up a notch!

I'm alive!

Hey everyone,

quick update to let you all know that I'm doing well. I had my wisdom teeth out yesterday and it all went better than expected. The teeth were almost all in so they were easy to remove. I'm already taking the minimal amount of painkillers and eating some soft foods.

My wii fit said that between yesterday morning and this morning I lost 1.8 pounds. I'm going to guess that that was a combination on the teeth, the blood loss and the no eating. Too bad I'm back to soft foods already, that weight loss won't last long. lol.

Other weight loss news, I somehow lost 2.2 pounds over the weekend while visiting Jordan's family. I did my best not to over indulge and the stress of my wisdom teeth coming out probably helped me from eating too much.

I am still a bit tired from the surgery and painkillers so I'll likely start real exercising again on the weekend.

I'll update you all again soon,

<3 Steph

Friday, August 7, 2009

I am going to be Busy Busy for the next few days and then comatose for the following week :)

We're driving to St. Catharines and then Waterloo tomorrow because we've got family stuff going on with both sides of Jordan's family. We drive back on Monday and then I get my wisdom teeth out on Tuesday. I'm not sure what this is going to do for the weightloss. I'm guessing I won't be eating much after I get my teeth out, but I won't be moving much either....so even if I just stay where I am I'll be happy.

I've been really tired this week. I did my workouts and yesterday was a rest day. And did I ever rest. I went to bed at 8pm and got up around 10pm. Then back to bed at about midnight and up around 8. Can't complain about that really.

No real dramatic news to report.

EA Sports Active Update

Some people were worried that some of the exercises on the Sports active would be too jarring or would further complicate a pre-existing condition.

Today I figured out, completely by accident, that you can limit the activities to ones that you are comfortable with. It may make your workouts a bit shorter, but you can always supplement them with workouts that you create yourself.

Before every workout it shows you a list of the activities that you are going to be doing that day. They have a green checkmark at the end of each one. If you click on that check mark it turns to a red X and it is taken out of the workout for you. It doesn't seem like you can substitute it for something easier, but like I said you can do another quick workout to burn those calories.

NEW MONTH!

Hello everyone.

I have a crazy amount of Energy for a Saturday. Up at 9:40 and cleaned the livingroom and scrubbed the shower walls and the tub. This isn't typical. Jordan slept till 11....he NEVER sleeps in let alone getting up after me. It's a weird day!

Anyway. I think that one of the things I want to do is on the first of every month tell you guys the progress I've made or the epic fail that happened. I weigh myself everyday on the wii fit. I started again on July 10th so it isn't a full month, but from now on it will be.

This month I have good news to report. From July 10th until today i have lost a total of 5.1 pounds!
I'm going to do it monthly cause we all know that our weight fluctuates daily and so I think if I have a steady downward trend for the month it will show a pretty accurate reflection of how I did.

It really could have been more, but last weekend I really let myself eat and drink whatever I wanted and it set me back. So this weekend I'm making a very conscious effort to allow myself some treats but not overdue it like last weekend. I gained 3 pounds from the Wednesday night to monday when I weighed myself.

YAY!

The Oprah Syndrome

Ok....I know you guys aren't all fans of Oprah (I'm looking at you Auntie Paula!) but I seem to be doing something that she so often does. Talks the talk but can't walk the walk, or jog the jog, or run the run....you get it.

Lets face it, I'm not new to weightloss. I've tried things that don't work, I've tried things that do. I know pretty well what works for me and what I should be doing. But do I do it? Hell no!

Why is that? Why do we refuse to do what is right, while justifying why we're doing wrong?

I think that I am so used to falling of the wagon that I wouldn't know how to handle success. Sounds stupid right? You should handle success by celebrating and being happy. To me celebrating means food. Food means gaining weight (at least the foods I'd celebrate with would) and going back to where I started. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm scared of success because it would mean the start of the decline.

I have to stop thinking about weightloss as something that will end at some point. It's a life long "journey" (I hate to use that word, it sounds so hokey) and there isn't really a finish line. That also scares me....cause I don't want to have to worry about calories for the rest of my life.

Geez....why can't Biggest Loser just come knock on my door and offer me 250,000 bucks. Now THAT would motivate me! :)

Review: EA Sports Active for the Wii

I said that I would start to do some reviews on things that I've tried for weightloss. I figured I would start with the EA Sportsactive because it's the tool that I'm using the most right now.

Please keep in mind...this is NOT a game. You think it's going to be fun? HA!

With that said, the EASA has 2 modes. The 30 day challenge or just workouts. For both of these settings you will use the equipment provided. A leg strap that you put around your right thigh that you put the nunchuck in. This is used to monitor your movements. You also get a resistance band for the strength training excercises. The balance board from the Wii fit is also compatible and certain days of your workout will focus on exercises using it.

30 Day Challenge: This setting gives you 30 days to complete 20 workouts. You workout for 2 days and the 3rd is a rest day. The workouts vary a lot. One day will be about legs, the next could be arms, it could be both or you could be focusing on the sports games that are part of the workouts. You have a trainer that monitors your progress and gives you encouragement.

Also in the 30 day challenge you have a journal. This tracks your workouts, your daily healthy habits and will allow you to enter other activities that you do in a day. Based on these 3 things you get a rating at the end of the day either bronze, silver or gold. This is helpful because even on your days off of the workout you can still make sure that you are being healthy by filling in the data.

Workouts: You can also skip the 30 days challenge and just do the pre programmed workouts that they have. I haven't really done this at all....I would assume that they just alternate through all of them for the 30 day challenge. Maybe some people feel that the 30 day challenge is too stressful and would rather workout at their own pace....or on their days off want to get in some more exercise. You are also able to create your own workouts by scrolling through the various exercises and picking the ones you want.

I friggen love this thing. It's motivating and challenging. I'm working on the 30 day challenge on easy. When I'm done I'll start on medium....someday I may try hard...I'm pretty sure it would kill me now. :)

That was a really long winded post...and I'm not sure that I covered everything. But I'm just excited about it and wanted to share it with you guys. If you've been wondering about it or contemplating buying it I would say DO IT! Even if you just do it when you don't feel like going to the gym or don't want to go outside, this isn't any less of a workout.

If you have any questions, or I didn't explain something enough just let me know in the comments.

Back to work and back on track

Monday morning!

It was REALLY hard to get out of bed this morning. It was nice and rainy and there was thunder. But I got up. Have to try and start this week properly.

Let's all pretend my 4 day weekend never happened shall we?

I'm going to be doing 2 workouts this evening to try and catch up. Can you catch up on working out? I'm going to try it. I tend to work to hard in the beginning, get hurt and give up...so maybe I need to slow down upfront....and then gradually build to longer workouts. I'm just impatient.

Hope you all have a good week. I'll post again soon.

<3 Steph

Called it.

So as I said, the weekends or days that I have off are really not great for me.

Thursday was an ok day to start with...but ended up drinking some beers which lead to getting some pizza. I only had 2 slices of pizza, and it was crappy pizza pizza so it could have been worse for me. Seeing as there is so little cheese and the crust is pretty thin. I think I would have enjoyed breaking my diet with a slice from Gabriels a little more, but c'eat la vie.

Today I was up early running errands and only had a coffee and fritter during the day. I got home and decided to clean my house (yay accidental exercise!) I've been trying to follow the rule of only eating when I'm hungry....and I guess last nights late night pizza party threw off my eating schedule. i didn't end up eating a meal until about 6:30 today. :S

I haven't gotten a real workout in the past few days, I've been getting shin splints and am trying to let my leg rest a bit. I'll be back to my regular workouts tomorrow though and hopefully the food is back on track.

Last night when I was going to bed I thought of a good topic to write about....but a can't remember for the life of me.

If anyone reading this (presumabley only 4 of you) has a question or wants my view on a certain weightloss strategy just leave a comment and I'll let try and answer it.

Thanks for reading.

Don't tease me Wii Fit!

One of the ways that I am tracking my journey is with the Wii Fit body test. I use it mainly to just weigh in and watch the graph (hopefully) move down and down to my goal.

Today I lost a little faith in what the wii fit is telling me.

I got on at the same time I get on everyday, which is after I get home and get a work out in. Today it told me that I lost 3 pounds since last time....which was yesterday at the same time. Even though I did work out really hard yesterday, I knew that there was no way I lost that much. I turned off the wii. Let it sit for a bit and tried again.....turns out i actually gained .2 of a pound.

So to my wii fit I say, "come on, don't tease me like that, baaaby!" (said in a Conan O'Brianesque manner)

On the plus side, i did work out again and had a pretty good day in terms of eating. Got in 1.5 litres of water already. I try to drink about 3 litres a day...it's not as hard as it sounds. It does make for getting up in the middle of the night like an old lady though. I drink a lot of perrier for the variety.

I surprisingly got the next 2 days off work....and if you've tried to lose weight you know that the weekends are the hardest and I'm now going to be struggling against a 4 day weekend. We'll see how that goes.

<3 Steph

p.s. if you're reading this leave a comment and tell me what you do to try and stay true on the weekends!

YAY! Followers!

Sweeet!

I'm glad I've got you guys following me. :) This is exactly what I wanted so that I stay motivated.

There are a lot of things that I embarass myself with on a daily basis...ie: tripping, spilling food, not having good bus etiquette...etc. But this is something that I really don't want to embarrass myself over.

So thanks.

July 21st 2009

This is the first post for my new weightloss blog! Huzza! I've wanted to do a blog for a long time, but never really knew what to write about. Obviously, write what you know, and what I know is a struggle with weight. (Thanks to Val for giving me the idea of blogging again!)

I don't want to get into any of the sappy "woe is me, i'm overweight" crap. I just want to chronicle this journey and give out some good tips and tell you what's crap about weightloss. And I'm sure I'll throw in some grumblings about my day to day life as well.

So! What am I doing to lose weight!? A lot these days.

1) Eating better (duh) this includes limiting sweets, junk food, and pop. I'm proud to say I haven't been drinking pop regularly since June 17th. I used to drink about 3-4 cans of diet pepsi or coke zero a day. :s

2) Excercising (duh, again) My boyfriend bought me a bike for my birthday, so I'm getting into the swing of riding again. It's not like riding a bike....what a stupid expression. Riding a bike is something you have to re-teach yourself....there's a lot of swerving involved the first few times you get back on!

I have the Wii fit, the EA sportsactive for the wii and a turbojam dvd that I alternate between. I'll delve deeper into reviewing those in a later post.

I guess all this to say that I'm trying my best to do this the right way. I guess if you are struggling with this as well you can keep an eye on this to get some inspiration and what not. Also if you're a snoop (like me) you may just want to follow this to get some not-so-interesting gossip.

Cheers,

Steph

p.s. I'll think about posting numbers when I'm more comfortable...or maybe once I reach my goal. LOL.
